This paper provides an institutional analysis of freight-rate formation in the crude oil and refined-product tanker markets serving Sub-Saharan Africa, the Gulf, and the broader Indian Ocean basin. Drawing on Panthera Capital Partners' experience in tonnage procurement, voyage charter execution, and fleet-strategy optimisation, the study examines the structural variables that drive rate volatility across Suezmax, Aframax, and MR tanker segments.
The research identifies three primary dislocations in the Sub-Saharan freight market: seasonal tonnage shortages driven by West African loading-window clustering, route-specific premiums caused by port-infrastructure bottlenecks (particularly in Pointe-Noire, Douala, and Luanda), and the growing impact of sanctions-related fleet redeployment on available tonnage in the Atlantic basin. The paper quantifies these effects using proprietary fixture data spanning 2,400+ voyages recorded between 2019 and 2025.
The resulting model enables institutional charterers and trading desks to anticipate rate movements with greater precision, hedge freight exposure more effectively, and optimise vessel selection for specific Sub-Saharan routes. The paper concludes with a 12-month forward outlook for the three key segments and recommendations for integrating freight-rate intelligence into commodity-trading P&L frameworks.
